- History of Kerns Companies -
The Kerns Companies began about 1942 as Kerns Trucking, delivering construction materials to various sites in the Stillwater, Oklahoma area. L.G. “Red” Kerns owned three trucks which moved materials from the railroad to jobsites before the development of the state highway system. In 1959, Red’s son, Robert “Bob” Kerns, joined the business after graduating from Oklahoma State University and serving in the U.S. Air Force. Bob added site excavation and grading, eventually expanding into asphalt and concrete paving. The name of the company was changed to Kerns Construction, Inc. to reflect the expanded scope of the services now offered. In 1969, Bob purchased a hot mix asphalt plant and began producing asphalt products for paving jobs under the corporate name of Kerns Asphalt Company, Inc.
In 1984, Bob’s son, Jeff Kerns, joined the family business after graduation from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Civil Engineering and the University of Texas with an MBA. Over the years, the company has grown to provide site utilities, including water, sewer, and storm systems, and soil stabilization in addition to excavation, demolition, grading, and paving. Recently the company has expanded into asphalt and concrete recycling with the purchase of a crusher and screen plant. Recent jobs have included Wal-Mart, Lakeview Pointe Shopping Center, many Oklahoma State University projects including the OSU North Classroom Building and student housing jobs and many miles of city and county roads.
In 1986, Bobby Flowers joined Bob and Jeff Kerns to form Kerns Ready-Mixed Concrete, Inc., which serves all of Payne County and neighboring counties. Bobby’s years of experience in the concrete business, hands-on management style, and commitment to a high level of customer service allows Kerns Ready-Mixed Concrete to provide a superior product delivered by professional drivers to individual home owners as well as residential and commercial contractors for jobs of all sizes.
